3 Health Benefits of Living Near the Ocean

Ocean sunsetFlorida has long been a highly desirable vacation spot and there are many lavish former hotels left to prove it, some of which are still in business. But did you know that many vacationers were actually sent here on their doctor’s orders? There are a variety of benefits to living near the ocean, but some of the biggest benefits are actually to your health. Here are three of the biggest advantages of choosing luxury apartments and condos in Destin, FL.

1. Water Puts Us At Ease

Just the thought of putting your toes in the sand and listening to the sound of the ocean can be enough to put you in a more relaxed state of mind. It’s actually been shown that our brains are wired to react positively to being near water, which is why the sea elicits this relaxed response. The ocean gives our brains a rest from the stimulation of our everyday lives, both auditory and visual. At work or home, your mind is subjected to a myriad of stimulation. Cars, television, mobile devices, interacting with other people, the list goes on and on. Because there’s less sensory information to process when you’re looking at the ocean, it gives your brain less to work on and creates that relaxed feeling everyone is looking for. The horizon is less stimulating visually, and the white noise of the ocean moving gives your mind just enough sound to process without being overwhelming.

2. The Great Outdoors

The beach is an inviting space for outdoor activity, which can improve your overall health. When there’s such a wide open space available, people are much more likely to get daily exercise. Being out in the Florida sunshine provides your body with Vitamin D and there are actually many health benefits to swimming in salty sea water. Salt rooms in spas are becoming more and more popular, but one of the benefits of being by the ocean is that you have your own version of a salt room. The salt air is good for your respiratory system, which is why so many doctors used to prescribe beach time to their patients as treatment for their illnesses.

3. Beachside Living

While taking a beach vacation can be great, one of the many benefits of living near the ocean is that you have the opportunity to make that vacation vibe a bit more permanent. In addition to the direct health benefits of being near the ocean, beach communities typically have much more to offer in terms of amenities and entertainment, especially if you choose to live in a luxury apartment which offers amenities such as clubhouses, gyms, and pools. Venues for shopping, eating, and recreation are typically within walking distance, which gives you the opportunity to enjoy more of that fresh salt air. 1. I agree that if you choose to live by the ocean, you can make vacation vibes a bit more present in your life. I grew up really close to the ocean, so my family and I used to go to the beach every weekend and I loved it. My husband and I want our kids to experience the same thing, so we are thinking of moving to California to give them the same experience.

  2. Thank you for pointing out that our brains react positively to being near water, which is why the sea elicits a relaxed response. My brother has been thinking about buying a condo that is for sale near the lake in our area. It’s good to know that water helps our brains rest from the stimulation of day to day life.

  3. My cousin really wants to live by the ocean. She has been thinking about moving into a house on or near the beach. It was interesting to learn about how she will get a lot more vitamin D because she will get more sun.

  4. Until I read this, I didn’t know swimming in seawater had benefits. My kids and I need a larger home than we have now. We’ll have to look into oceanfront properties for sale.
